Goddess Dhumavati

Hindu Goddess Dhumavati is the unique goddess who maybe best embodies and illustrates recent time and the state on the planet. We can call upon her to help transform all the evil of this world into the sacred fire and smoke of its destruction, and return us to the sacred space of emptiness of the cosmic womb of the Supreme Divine Mother:

Dhumavati is one of the ten Tantric goddesses, known as the Mahavidyas, representing the fearsome and destructive aspect of the Divine Feminine in Hinduism. Portrayed as an elderly widow on a horseless chariot, she embodies the void, smokey remnants after destruction, and ultimate knowledge beyond material illusion.

Key Aspects of Dhumavati:

  • Iconography: Dhumavati is depicted as an old, thin, ugly woman with disheveled hair and a third eye, often wearing dirty clothes, holding a winnowing basket, and riding a crow.

  • The Widow Goddess: She is the only Hindu goddess representing the status of a widow, symbolizing the state of existence before creation and after destruction.

  • Worship & Benefits: Worshipped mainly in Tantric traditions to remove black magic, overcome, sorrow, and destroy desires. She is believed to be tenderhearted to her devotees, providing protection from negative influences.

  • Symbolism: She embodies the "fire of destruction" and, despite her inauspicious appearance, represents profound, harsh wisdom—breaking illusions to reveal ultimate truths.

  • Major Temple: A prominent shrine to Dhumavati is located in Varanasi, where she is worshiped as a local guardian goddess.

Dhumavati Sadhana is often recommended to face life's obstacles and to cultivate deep detachment (Vairagya) from material desires.

Dhumavati ("the smoky one"), portrayed as a Goddess of strife, loneliness, unfulfilled desires and inauspicious things, is one of the Mahavidyas, a group of ten Hindu Tantric goddesses. Dhumavati represents the fearsome aspect of Mahadevi, the supreme goddess in Hindu traditions such as Shaktism. She is often portrayed as a young woman and is associated with things considered inauspicious and unattractive in Hinduism, such as the crow and the chaturmasya period. The goddess is often depicted carrying a winnowing basket on a horseless chariot or riding a crow, usually in a cremation ground.

Dhumavati is said to manifest herself at the time of cosmic dissolution (pralaya) and is "the Void" that exists before creation and after dissolution. While Dhumavati is generally associated with only inauspicious qualities, her thousand-name hymn relates her positive aspects as well as her negative ones. She is often called tender-hearted and a bestower of boons. Dhumavati is described as a great teacher, one who reveals ultimate knowledge of the universe, which is beyond the illusory divisions, like auspicious and inauspicious. Her ugly form teaches the devotee to look beyond the superficial, to look inwards and seek the inner truths of life.
